In 2014, Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies took the world by storm. The humor, relatable characters, intense storyline and portrayal of domestic abuse made the book a New York Times Bestseller for a reason. Then in 2017, HBO announced a mini-series adaptation was hitting our screens! The “mini-series” went on to earn 16 Emmy Award nominations – yeah, it’s that good. So good that HBO announced Big Little Lies season two will be released next year with seven brand new episodes. YES! Here’s what we know about season two so far.
There’s a new director.
During season one, Jean-Marc Vallée directed every episode but he said, “If we do a season two, we’ll break [a] beautiful thing and spoil it.” As a result, he’s not returning for season two. Andrea Arnold will take his place. Arnold directed episodes of Transparent and I Love Dick and also the Oscar-winning film Wasp.
They’re all back!
Fret not, all the Monterey moms are coming back! Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will not just reprise their roles but they’ll return as executive producers as well. Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley will also reprise their epic roles.
Liane Moriarty also pens season 2’s story.
As mentioned, Big Little Lies is based on a book by Liane Moriarty. While Moriarty never published a sequel, she did write a new story which season two will be based on. Now that’s amazing! Plus, the season one showrunner and writer David E. Kelley also came back to write a few episodes.
Alexander Skarsgard might return.
For his portrayal of Perry, Skarsgard went on to win an Emmy, a SAG Award, and a Golden Globe. Let’s not forget that his character was involved in a fatal, although welcome, “accident”. Perhaps he’ll return in flashbacks or in Celeste’s nightmares, either way, the executive producer Bruna Papandrea said “not that I know of” when asked if Skarsgard would return. Skarsgard himself said, “I don’t even know if I’m really dead or not. I feel OK right now but we’ll see.”
