Dan and his wife had lived their lives with this kind of risk. Her wife even brought up an auction company because it was their hobby and their business. It was like a gamble for the auctioneering couple. They have encountered a lot of kinds of storage in their lives. Some were good, and some were busts. Over the years, it has been their life’s routine and cycle. However, they were not expecting that one complete stranger would change their lives and give them a find they never thought of.

One time, Dan and Laura went out to a charity event hosted by Cars, Stars, and Rock N’ Roll in Indio, California. This was just one of the many events they had attended. They were used to how events like this turn out. The venues are splendid, the place is jam-packed with many guests, and everyone has dressed formally, which, of course, points out to one purpose – raise funds. But one thing bothered Dan on this event, he felt that a pair of eyes were intently staring at him.

Finally, the creepy feeling Dan had gone away when a stranger headed toward him at the end of the charity event. The stranger seemed to be an older Asian Woman. Dan had never met this stranger – this he was quite reasonably sure. The woman went on and spoke with Dan telling him that they had a connection in the past. She then said that her husband had previously purchased a storage unit from Dan for $500. According to the woman, when they opened it, they discovered something unusual inside.

She and her husband discovered a locked vault inside the storage unit they purchased from Dan. Dan, as an auctioneer, of course, got excited more than anyone who knew it. When safes are left and found in the storage units, it usually contains nothing. The previous storage owners probably left the safe inside because they were a hassle to move. But this stranger insisted that the safe left inside their purchased storage was different. So when she had a chance to talk to Dan and Laura, she immediately approached them.

The strange woman, the moment they knew that the vault left in the storage was locked, hired a locksmith to crack it open. But then, even the most professional locksmith they hired insisted that he couldn’t or wouldn’t dare open it. It was bizarre. The locksmith could not get his story or at least his reason straight. They were wondering what was in the vault that gave so much of a negative vibe. This was the time that the woman decided to approach Dan and his wife at the event.

For Dan and Laura, who were used to this kind of bizarre thing, they were not afraid to find out and get surprised. The couple immediately drove to the Asian woman’s storage facility. Surprisingly, they quickly managed to break open the lock of the vault. As Dan was slowly opening the door to the trunk, his heart skipped a beat. What they saw were few dollar bills poking out of the vault. It seemed that there were a lot more inside to be discovered. What they saw next shocked them.

The couple thought that when they initially opened the vault, they had seen it all. But they had never found so much money just sitting inside a vault and collecting dust! It took quite a while for them to count the money, and much to their surprise, it turned out to be $7.5 million! Suddenly, it excited them and have them all the feeling that they are going to be rich. It is definitely a significant amount of money and could do a lot for them if they divide it. But things got a bit complicated from here.

News about the discovery of the massive amount of cash soon spread widely. The new owners then received a surprise phone call from someone who sounded quite serious. Upon answering the phone call, the person on the other line quickly began giving instructions about the money. It turned out that the surprise phone call came from the original owners of the safe. They heard about the news and immediately looked for a way to connect with the new owners. The new owners were a bit astonished after the phone call.

The following events that happened after the call was somehow weren’t expected. The people who claimed to be the original owners of the money, only communicated to the new owners through their lawyer. They did not even provide much information about themselves. They just wanted the new owners to walk away and take the $600,000 with them. It was their offer if they would return the rest of the money. Such a strange deal, right? If the new owners weren’t careful enough, they might lose the $7.5 million that easily.

Dan and Laura were unsure about how they would handle the case. It was entirely new to them, and they needed someone’s wisdom. Dan reached out to one of his Storage Wars colleagues Rene Nezhoda. Rene Nezhoda is also one of the well-known bidders. He tried to ask if Rene had any idea or assumptions why so much money was left inside the vault and was stored in a locker. Rene gave Dan some of his thoughts and wild ideas, but it seemed that none of them was good news.

One of Rene Nezhoda’s thoughts was, the original owners might have a good reason to put the enormous sum of money inside the vault, locked up in storage instead of putting it safely in a bank institution. The original owners might not fully trust the banks during their time for some specific reason. And just like in the film Breaking Bad, this massive amount of money might be somewhat related or connected or involved in something nasty. They couldn’t help themselves but think of other worse and more dangerous assumptions.

In fact, Rene Nezhoda imagined that these stacks of dollar bills belonged and came directly from an illegal drug cartel. Rene gave Dan, Laura, and the new owners and other associates something to ponder deeply. Should they risk themselves, gamble their lives, and get tangled with such dangerous people? For Rene, perhaps, it would be a lot safer and less hassle if they would just choose to walk away and let go of the money. Dan, Laura, and their associates thought deep about what Rene’s wisdom offered them and decided.

Obviously, Dan and Laura didn’t have any ownership over the cash. But the couple advised their friends to justify themselves if ever any matter will rise up. Dan briefed them and told them that they would attempt to negotiate with the people who claim to be the money’s original owners. His demand would be, they would keep $1.2 million instead of $600,000. If the original owners would agree, only then would they return the rest of the cash. I wonder what made the original owners agree with Dan Dotson’s demand!

Unexpectedly and with all their bravery, the tactic that Dan came up with became successful. It worked! Even though the new owners had to give up and give most of the discovered money back to the original owners, they still came out of the negotiation as rich people. That is definitely not a bad payment for a $500 storage unit purchase. Imagine buying a $500 storage unit that you had no idea will turn you later on like a millionaire. They would no longer be estranged by the locked safe.

On the other hand, Dan and Laura Dotson didn’t end up any richer due to this case. But this was so far the biggest ride of their careers as auctioneers. This taught them many lessons and allowed them to explore more of their hobbies. Discovering a tremendous amount of money is more than enough to make someone’s day better, right? These three roommates decided to reside in the charming, old-fashioned town of New Paltz, nestled in New York’s Hudson Valley. This community is indeed a neat place to live. There are a lot of restaurants, coffee shops, and parks around New Paltz. There is really no crime to speak of in this place. Residents here tend to be lean and conservative, and schools here were highly rated. Many young professionals live here, and some of them were these three youths. Yet, these young people weren’t actually surrounded by luxury here.

Lara Russo, Cally Guasti, and Reese Werkhoven were all in between enrolled in college or just recent graduates. They love to eat ramen because this would only cost them a small amount of money. The three were very wise to spend most of their incomes toward their rent and, of course, food. Any leftover cash they have, they choose to invest it. But with all the wise spendings they usually and strictly do, all of them agreed that their apartment desperately needs furniture. They are now ready to hunt furniture.

These three young people around twenty-somethings looked for an excellent place to buy furniture. They ended up wandering into their local Salvation Army store. It was a thrift store with great deals of clothing, home goods, and electronics. They immediately inspected and checked every single couch they would find in the couch selection. They saw some adorable furniture pieces, but unfortunately, they wouldn’t fit in their apartment. Finally, they came across a piece of perfectly sized furniture. It was green, and it looked doozy. It was extraordinary of its kind.

The three young roommates had no other choice but to bring home the oldest and the ugliest couch they had found in the thrift store. They had no other choice since it was cheap. It was only twenty bucks, and this was the only furniture in the couch section to fit their new apartment. The couch was ugly, yet it was a bargain, so they bought it. They thought that as long as the sofa serves its purpose, it would probably be cool to use it despite the unsightly look.

They tried and checked what exactly they would feel while sitting on their sofa. They watched some television shows and had themselves relaxed. However, as they were sitting quite a while, some doubts crept inside their minds. As they were sitting on the couch, one part of it felt so uncomfortable. It was weird. It almost felt like there was something inside the sofa they just bought.

They were all having these half-serious thoughts about their sofa. Finally, the three roommates started searching through the couch. They realized that most of the sofa’s parts were already bulging. Some parts were even out of its standard shape. They could not complain because they all agreed to buy the couch from a thrift store. They all knew that the sofa isn’t new. They searched for more and more. They lifted the pillows one by one, and to Reese’s surprise, there was a thick envelope in one of the cushions.

They were astonished! Cally and Lara helped out each other and tore apart the rest of the couch as if they were mad. They were curious about what other things were probably inside the sofa. As they searched for more of what’s on the couch, they were able to locate another envelope. Two envelopes down. Within a few seconds, another envelope was found, and then another, and then more. Soon, they realized that there were so many envelopes hiding throughout the couch! They almost forgot that it was newly bought!

In front of them now, their new sofa lay in pieces. But they ignored that part and the twenty bucks they spent on buying it didn’t seem to matter. They totally forgot the effort they spent in looking for the perfect furniture. The three roommates now had lots of mysterious envelopes that seemed to beg to be opened. Each of them looked keenly at each envelope, but they clearly had no idea how they would react. According to Reese, the feeling was as if she almost peed in her pants.

The three young roommates decided to open all the envelopes that they had found. Finally, after opening it, they could not believe what they were seeing. They even thought that maybe they were just seeing things. Much to their surprise, each envelope contained rolls of dollar bills inches thick. Obviously, every denomination was inside the envelopes — from ones up to hundreds. If the three of them were to count all the money up, they would obviously take a while. They discovered an enormous amount of money, a serious bundle.

Loose Change Between Cushions

Lara Russo, Cally Guasti, and Reese Werkhoven laughed together and even cried while counting the bundles of bills. They reminisced about their childhood — when they all had a chance to find the loose change between their sofa’s cushions. However, their present discovery defied the explanations they grew up into. None of them could explain now how those envelopes were stuck inside the sofa and why these enormous amounts stayed inside it for time without even the Salvation Army store’s knowledge. The couch was just there collecting dust in the section.

Finally, they were able to count them all, and the money inside the couch added up to $41,000! Would you believe that? The three roommates talked about how much rent it would probably cover. Reese Werkhoven even thought and mentioned buying his mom a car. All of them had suggestions for spending it. However, they discovered one last and final object on the couch that took away their laughter and threatened to prevent everything that they had planned in advance for the couch money. There was a separate envelope, old, torn, and rugged as it was.  It was carefully slipped on the couch, and inside it was a bank deposit slip. The paper also contained all sorts of personal information, such as an address, including the full name of which the three presumed to be the couch’s owner and, of course, the money’s owner.

The roommates started having a real dilemma on their hands. They already thought of how big that money could help them. They had to decide what to do with the money. Thankfully, they ended up agreeing to do the best thing — return the money to its owner. (This trio quite impresses us.) Before doing so, they had to make sure they could track down the owner through the details in the final envelope the three discovered, and of course, through the Salvation Army store where they bought the sofa.

Hoping that they weren’t wasting their once in a lifetime financial opportunity, the three roommates went back to the Salvation Army store. They told the store everything that had happened starting from the time they picked and bought the furniture up to the moment they found out that the sofa had stacks of bills inside. Without hesitation, they shared the bank information that they discovered with the store. Luckily, the charity’s store manager was able to track down the original owners. They had no chances of backing out that time.

The following day, the young roommates from New Paltz immediately drove out to the address provided by the Salvation Army. When they finally arrived, what they saw wasn’t something to be liked about. They came to a house that was totally old and rundown. It looked like a house that didn’t experience repairs for a decade now. The house looked exhausted over time. You could also see several signs hung in the fence, warning them to beware of dogs. However, the roommates wondered when they would ever encounter these dogs.

After a while, an old woman opened the door and welcomed them inside the rundown house. They were relieved. The old woman and the roommates had a few conversations, and they got to know each other more. The roommates found out that she was a florist back then. She retired from her flower shop when her husband passed away. After her husband’s passing, she spent most of her days alone. She claimed that the money that was found was hers, however, she completely forgot that it was on the sofa.

The roommates were surprised by the fact that the old woman forgot that she put a tremendous amount of money inside her old couch. They scratched their heads, and as the woman saw her young visitors wondering how that happened, she explained the reason behind. According to her, she grew up in a time when people could not trust banks. Instead of putting it in an account, they stuffed them inside the furniture. Later on, their kids donated the couch away, and they totally forgot that there was money inside.

Upon hearing the old woman’s explanation, the roommates were enlightened. They truly understood why the pile of cash wasn’t theirs to decide and take. They delightfully returned the money to the old woman. The old woman, in return, was very grateful for their kind gesture. She saw how these kids from New Paltz drove all the way to her to return her money. They could have thought of spending, but they chose to return the money to her. The roommates didn’t know that the woman prepared a surprise for them.

The old woman’s surprise to them was, she allowed the roommates to keep $1,000. She said it was like a finder’s fee. $1,000 is not so big compared to the total sum of money that they found. But having $1,000 wasn’t a bad return on a $20 couch purchase. Aside from the finder’s fee, they got to keep the couch as well. It was not just the finder’s fee that they were after, but the peace that the three of them will have knowing that they did the right thing.

For Lara Russo, Cally Guasti, and Reese Werkhoven, what they chose to do was right. Deciding to return the savings that they found on the thrift couch, to the rightful owner was truly rewarding. If they got to the trio’s shoes, the majority of people would’ve spent all the discovered cash, not even attempted to look for the original owner, or might fail to find it at all! These three young roommates just did the right thing. Aside from that, they definitely spared themselves from sleepless nights and unpeaceful minds.

Take note, the spacesuits they bought were the official 1980s-era suits. Later on, they found out that they were actually worth so much more. Their suits were worth $5,000 each!

While walking down the shelves of posters, he spotted this reproduction Picasso poster, and he was immediately drawn to it. For only $14, he was able to purchase it. Not until he noticed a Velvet Underground test-pressing on a deal just across the street. This vinyl was only intended to be seen by the record label and the distributor. He was able to buy it for 75 cents only. Little did he know that vinyl records are now a fortune. Eventually, he sold it on eBay for $25,000!

Jennifer Thompson was able to purchase the Nintendo game Stadium Events from a North Carolina thrift store for just $8. She was just browsing clothes and some DVDs when she stumbled on the Nintendo game. There, aside from picking up the furniture, she also found a unique painting that fell from its crease. The said art was believed to have been created between 1605 and 1620 – quite antique! The artist was unknown, but the painting portrayed Carlo Saraceni, an Italian, first-class early-baroque painter. The artist might be unfamiliar, but the art was eventually auctioned for $27,630 – a lot of money!

The experts who saw the bowl instantly knew that it was a Chinese tripod censer that came from 18 centuries ago – the Qianlong period. Every watch collector’s dream was to find a unique, rare, and valuable watch that is for sale for almost nothing at a thrift shop. One day, Zach Norris went to a Phoenix thrift store, hoping he would find a cheap golf trolley. He did not expect that he would get as much as he bargained for. There was a basket that was filled with watches with dead batteries. There he saw a watch that cost $5.99. It was a watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre that turned out to be worth $35,000!

Sean and Rikki McEvoy, a couple who lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, once went to a thrift store and randomly purchased a black sports sweater. The couple was able to buy the sports sweater for a thrift amount – 58 cents. After purchasing it, they saw a name under the tag that says, “Lombardi.” Their hearts almost dropped. In 2013, an anonymous Australian man was thrift shopping in Sydney when he stumbled upon a pretty cup. It caught his attention, and he was able to buy it for $3 then returned home with it. The man did not know that the cup was actually an extraordinary and rare Chinese libation cup made of rhino horn. It was a traditional Chinese cup. Sotheby, one of the world’s largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewelry, real estate, and collectibles, was able to fetch the libation cup at $60,000. Cool!

In 1994, an anonymous and an avid golf player walked through a thrift store in Toronto, Canada. There he found an eye-catching green jacket that was up for sale for only $5. The man discovered that the jacket was an authentic one from a 1950s National. There was no golfer’s name stitched onto it. The jacket might be famous for its name, but the original owner was still unknown until the present.

There was a person who went shopping in a second-hand goods market around the Brooklyn area. She noticed a unique metallic gray necklace that only cost $15.
