Bad News Hits

In 2014, the couple made the journey to Missouri by car, no less! Distance didn’t matter to Sarah and Andy, growing their family did. After driving for six hours, they finally reached the clinic only to receive devastating news. Sarah and Andy just weren’t prepared for the news the doctor delivered.

No Chance

They braced themselves for the worst but they couldn’t imagine just how bad it was. The doctor informed the couple that Sarah had no chance of conceiving a child. Naturally, the Justices were destroyed by the news the doctor told them. But that wasn’t all he told them.

Option A

The fertility specialist delivered yet another blow. He informed Sarah and Andy that while they’re good candidates for in-vitro fertilization, their chance of actually becoming pregnant is just 10%. Furthermore the Justice’s were alarmed to learn just how invasive and expensive in-vitro fertilization is. Meaning their chances of becoming parents was quickly diminishing.

Bills and Bills

Ranging anywhere from $12,000 to $15,000 for just a basic IVF cycle, which insurance doesn’t cover, the Justice’s were looking at a bill somewhere in-between $30,000 and $60,000 overall. They weren’t prepared to spend that kind of money on something that wasn’t even a guarantee. While they did want to be parents, they knew that couldn’t afford a round of IVF.

With all the numbers drawn, Sarah and Andy knew they had to pursue other options. Without hesitation, they decided that adoption was their only option. While they also knew that the adoption process could be just as grueling, they felt this was their only choice.

Be that as it may, the Justice’s filled out a Mouth Everest stack of paperwork! This then leads to a complete agency review, so all they needed to do now was wait.

When the day finally came for the house study, Sarah and Andy were really nervous. They answered all the questions and hoped their answers were what the agency wanted to hear. And of course they hoped the house study would go off without a hitch, they didn’t have to wait long for an answer either. The Justice’s passed the home study! But that wasn’t the final hurdle.

With the home study completed, the Justice’s had to undergo various interviews – which is completely draining and exhausting. Through a series of interviews with all prospective birth mothers, Sarah and Andy were under the microscope. However, their struggles were only just beginning. They had to wait for a birth mother to choose them and they had no idea just how long they would need to wait.

Sarah and Andy met with the new birth mother, but they were still cautious. They had been hurt before and the couple didn’t know if they could handle such loss again. The News

The birth mother had not been to a proper exam before so she didn’t have a lot of information to offer Sarah and Andy. They were both learning about the baby at the same time and that was pretty remarkable for both parties. However, they had no idea the news waiting for them at the doctor’s appointment. Nothing prepared them for what the doctor said.

C-C-C-Changes

Goes without saying but when you’re a family of six, many changes need to be made! Not only did they change their schedules but they also bought a bigger van. In addition to all that, Sarah and Andy also had to develop a method to be able to tell the babies apart. So they painted the babies’ toenails with a different nail polish color in order to remember who was who. This was especially crucial when it came to feeding time!

Challenges

You would think that the new parents with five babies close in age would find feeding time, changing diapers, and other routines to be the most challenging. However, there were other challenges that they found themselves in. As we mentioned, they bought a bigger van and that’s because they needed to be able to transport everyone at once. That was a challenge they never even thought about.
