As mentioned, divorce was a taboo subject back then. However the signs that Carol was a divorcee were there, subtlety though. We do learn that her maiden name is Tyler but when she married Mike Brady, she changed her name from Carol Martin to Carol Brady. Therefore the writers snuck in that particular hint to show that she was divorced and not a widow.
