Thus, you may have seen the half mast flag during the opening credits. They finished filming their pilot on November 22, 1963, which is when President John F. Kennedy was shot.

Inside Joke

Since it’s been years, we’re pretty sure it’s safe to let this one out of the bag. While the show was aired a man named Newton Minow headed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Creator Sherwood Schwartz absolutely hated this man. Therefore, he invented a clever inside joke with the Gilligan’s Island crew. He named the shipwreck….the S.S. Minnow. Perhaps, Minow never even realized!
