However, Nadia did not get the chance to escape until several years later. At a party, the former gymnast met an interesting man called Constantin Panait. He explained that he had defected to the United States and that he had become a citizen. Nadia did not know at the time that he would end up changing the course of her life.

Nadia decided to put her trust in Panait since he was able to acquire American citizenship. She knew that there were risks involved but that did not stop her from following him in an attempt to leave Romania. They succeeded in 1989 by sneaking into Hungary and then into Austria. They were able to make it to the US by flying into Canada first. A couple of weeks later, the Romanian Revolution happened.
