Soon after this, her efforts to train with the Károlyis paid off. During the Los Angelic Olympic Games in 1984, she ended up becoming the first non-Eastern European female gymnast to take home the individual all-around gold. Interestingly, Retton was up against Ecaterina Szabo of Romania at the time.

Nadia was unable to tear her eyes away from the American team during the Olympic Games. Mary Lou Retton was not the one breaking her heart – it was her old coach. The Romanian government gave Nadia strict orders not to interact with him in any way. She was suffering and felt a strong urge to leave her home country.
