On the show, the NCIS director is named Leon Vance. Actually, Leon Vance was a WWII US Army Air Force B-24 Liberator bomber pilot. Vance even got awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Normandy Invasion on June 6 in 1944.

The Story
Unfortunately, Lt Colonel Vance got severely wounded during the invasion. Tragically, he recovered but then got killed during the cargo plane crash while being transported to Washington DC to get the Medal from President Roosevelt. In his honor, they named the Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma after him.
