So, was wearing the dress offensive? Was it racist? Well according to Lam, wearing the dress was an example of cultural appropriation and American colonialism. Since the dress was worn by a white American to an American prom, it became a subject of “American consumerism and to cater to a white audience is parallel to colonial ideology.”
