In the 1980s, Bobby got himself a job in the Baptist Medical Center cafeteria in Brooklyn. There, he met a coworker named Cheryl. Later, she became his wife. On their first date, they went to see Prince’s movie Purple Rain and a Gladys Knight and the Pips concert. Bobby said he’d never met anyone like Cheryl before. “Cheryl was innocent. The opposite of me. And that’s why I was so attracted to her,” he said, “Cheryl was soft. Almost in a naïve way.” He wanted to build a life with her, even though he knew it could come crashing down at any moment.
