The Ugliest Cars Throughout The Years

Published on 02/26/2019

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are things we can all agree on that are downright ugly. This is true for many different things, including cars. Over the years, a number of cars have been made that very few people would ever think to describe as ‘pretty’. We have compiled a list of the ugliest cars out there to honor the monstrosities.

2004 Covini C6W

We begin this list with the Covini C6W. This insect-like 6-wheeled vehicle has an incredible 400 hp engine, but its appearance is quite odd to be honest. In spite of the fact that the extra wheels were added to improve braking and help with balance, this car’s design is too weird to take seriously.

Marcos Mantis

Marcos was a British car manufacturer that specialized in sports cars and produced relatively ugly vehicles. However, it seems they outdid themselves with the Mantis. Fortunately, only one Mantis was released in 1968 and the car was retired not long after. Its last appearance was in 2008 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.

Troll Sportcoupé

This was an attempt by Troll Plastik & Bilindustri to make a car that has a fiberglass body. The reason the Norwegian manufacturer decided to use the material was that it was lightweight and came with various benefits, such as resistance to rust. The engineering was actually fine, but the design was an absolute failure. They only produced this model for a few years, from 1956 to 1958. While their next model wasn’t really as bad, it wasn’t exactly a looker either.

Hyundai Tiburon

This car has gone by many names but it’s officially known as the Hyundai Tiburon. In Europe, however, it was named the Hyundai Coupe. In Spanish, Tiburon means ‘shark’ and we have to say that this car does look like quite an unfortunate-looking shark.

Hyundai Tiburon

Hyundai Tiburon

Stutz Blackhawk

This Stutz monstrosity was first produced back in 1972 and was called the Blackhawk. Despite the fact that 40 years have passed, we still can’t understand what the designers had in mind for this car. Its length of 19 feet (nearly 6 meters) was ridiculous, and its exterior was hideous. It also didn’t help that this abomination was way too expensive during that time – over $120,000 if we talk about dollars in 2017. Surprisingly, Elvis Presley, aka the King, adored this car.

Stutz Blackhawk

Stutz Blackhawk

PT Cruiser

Overall, Chrysler is pretty much a decent car manufacturer, but this one is definitely not their best to say the least. The PT Cruiser is simply a failure. Even though we don’t know a lot about its performance, judging by what we can see, its design is a total disaster.

PT Cruiser

PT Cruiser

Brubaker Box

Whoever named this abomination truly deserves an award since they came up with such an apt name. The Brubaker Box is a rather ugly car and to be honest, it seems like a child drew a terrible van and it came to life. It’s literally an oddly-shaped box with wheels. Some might say that it resembles a gold Klondike bar. All the same, this van might be useful if there is a nuclear war, but in any other scenario, your best bet is to pass on this one.

Brubaker Box

Brubaker Box

Reliant Robin

This little mishap looks quite like a mix of a car, a motorcycle, and a boat, but not in a good and stylish way. This car was made in 1973 as a replacement for the Reliant Regal. Actually, the Reliant Robin was once among the most well-known fiberglass cars. These days, it has a spot on the list of the world’s ugliest cars by Top Car Magazine. However, all we can say about this car is that it’s ugly.

2010 Veritas RS III

By 2010, it had already been 60 years or more since Vermot AG was last active in the car industry. That year, they thought of making a serious comeback, but we really wish they hadn’t. The 2010 Veritas RS III, the car that they created, looked like a real monster. Its design is plain hideous and it looks as if a person pressed the wrong button, accidentally summoning a demon – the car.

The Nissan Cube

We’re pretty sure no one has ever wished to have a car that looks like a cube, but if you have, then you are part of an extremely small minority. Therefore, we cannot see why Nissan would ever design this car the way they did in the first place. This car is called the Nissan Cube – not really original. They started to produce this vehicle back in 1998, but to this day, there is still the occasional Cube that you can see on the road.

The Nissan Cube

The Nissan Cube

Weber Sportscars aka ‘Faster One’

This disastrous car was a lame attempt by Switzerland to dethrone the Bugatti Veyron as the fastest street-legal car back in 2008. It was named the Weber Sportscar or the Faster One but sadly, its design makes it look like they didn’t know what they were doing before they unleashed it into the world. In spite of the fact that car designs were improving by 2008, this car shows that not everybody got the design memo.

Panoz Abruzzi ‘Spirit of Le Mans’

In terms of design, this is a great example of what should not be done to a sports car. What’s more, the price tag of this abomination is appalling at £330,000. They planned to produce only 81 units of the Panoz Abruzzi ‘Spirit of Le Mans’. Fortunately, this car was never really able to make its debut since it had a natural death during the prototype stage.

Citroën Ami

You may think of fashion, perfume, and fine wine with France, but this car is proof the Frech aren’t perfect. Back in 1961, Citroën created the Ami, though we wish they hadn’t. Its odd body shape that they named the notchback and the oversized headlamps didn’t really help its poor design. We can’t stop ourselves from sighing sadly when we look at this car.

Citroën Ami

Citroën Ami

Fiat Multipla

We have no words for this… creation. No one forced Fiat to design the Multipla in such a way, instead they made the decision themselves AND on purpose. Released in 1998, this car continued to be produced until 2010. Even to this day, a few of these can still be seen roaming the streets. It truly looks like a person is holding in a sneeze, but a car version of that.

Fiat Multipla

The Aurora

One fine morning in 1957, a Catholic priest woke up and decided to make the safest car ever. This decision was made due to the high number of deaths resulting from car accidents. The idea was great, but the execution was rather awful and the outcome is the Aurora. We wonder if someone actually told the priest how hideous the car is or he went through life oblivious of the fact.

2011 Nissan Leaf

We just have to ask – isn’t there anyone at Nissan who is aware of the kind of cars they’re releasing? They don’t seem to have much success when it comes to innovative designs and this model clearly shows that. We respect them for trying to create new and exciting vehicles, but this isn’t how it should be done.

1973 Austin Allegro

When this car was released, it was really popular but looking back, we wonder why. It actually resembles a carton on wheels. Were there a shortage of options for family cars back in the ’70s? Anyway, we can at least be thankful for the fact that car designs have since gotten a lot better.

1973 Austin Allegro

1973 Austin Allegro

1959 Ford Anglia

This car shows that even the best can still make mistakes. While the 1959 Ford Anglia is not the worst that we’ve seen, it is still pretty awful. Its body shape is just awkward, stuck between being boxy and being stylish. Overall, we give this design a 2 out of 10.

1959 Ford Anglia

1959 Ford Anglia

1990 Chrysler Imperial

What we see here is a car that looks like a hearse’s sedan version. The 1990 Chrysler Imperial has a design that is black and boxy and seems to be fitting only for a funeral. It makes us glad to know that Chrysler has improved their designs since then.

1990 Chrystler Imperial

1975 Ford Granada

If driving a box with some wheels and a grille on it is something that you want, then this car is perfect for you. Otherwise, we’re left scratching our head how Ford came up with the design for this model. It seems as if the inspiration for the design of the 1975 Granada was a literal box.

1957 Trabant

You know how sometimes you come up with an idea that seems pretty good at the time but later regret it completely? Well, the 1957 Trabant is a good example of that. While it isn’t the worst we’ve seen so far, it’s certainly bad enough to have made it to this list. Everything from the car’s body shape to the colors chosen is just wrong.

1957 Trabant

1957 Trabant

1996 Suzuki X90

It seems that all the bad ideas that car designers ever had were incorporated this ugly little thing called the 1996 Suzuki X90. It isn’t just uncomfortably small. It also appears as if they meant to make it somewhat like a sports car but it ended up getting cursed with a rather hideous exterior.

1973 Oldsmobile Omega

If a cowboy car is something you wished you could drive, you’re in luck because the 1973 Oldsmobile Omega embodied the idea. It is a car with a bad design which resulted in quite an unfortunate look.

2007 Jeep Compass

We bet this one is something that Jeep seriously regrets. The brand may be known for cool designs, but they seriously dropped the ball with this one. We all know the classic sharp Jeep design but the 2007 Jeep Compass unfortunately can only be described as an inflated version of it.

2007 Jeep Compass

1986 Hyundai Excel

Do you remember drawing cars which basically looked like bricks when you were young? Well, this car is the real-life version. The 1986 Hyundai Excel wasn’t exactly the best way to start their manufacturing career but fortunately, the company has come a long way since this incident.

1986 Hyundai Excel

AMC Pacer

When the AMC Pacer came out back in 1975, it was all the rage. It was described as ‘futuristic’, ‘unique’ and ‘bold’ by the press. The gasoline crisis in the 1970s was the reason AMC produced the electric version of this model. To be honest, we can’t understand why the car was very popular. Looking at it, we just see a strange car.

AMC Pacer

Renault Fuego

French design studios created some of the most outstanding classics in the ’30s, but by the early ’80s, it seemed that the French lost their touch. It’s clear that they attempted to create a sports coupe when they made the Renault Fuego but they sadly failed. Similar to other ugly cars, it gets uglier the more that you look at it.

Renault Fuego

Pontiac Aztek

Because of its unfortunate exterior, this car has become more well-known compared to other ugly cars. The design of the Pontiac Aztek looks as though it was put together by three designers who didn’t communicate with each other. There are too many different elements in the design which simply don’t work together.

Pontiac Aztek

Pontiac Aztek

Nissan S-Cargo

Nissan may have been aiming for this van to have a retro-style look but to us, it looks like a snail, and that is not a compliment. While the S-Cargo can likely get the job done when it comes to hauling stuff, we’re not sure you would want to be caught driving it – at least we don’t.

Nissan S Cargo

Nissan S Cargo

Sebring-Vanguard CitiCar

You might not believe it but this strange looking box of a vehicle was once a really popular electric car in the U.S. Having said that, its popularity still wasn’t that huge in general when it was released back in 1974 probably because its top speed is only 39 miles per hour. For some reason, its designers thought that making it look like a triangular golf cart was a great idea.

Sebring Vanguard CitiCar

Sebring Vanguard CitiCar

Lightburn Zeta

The Lightburn Zeta came straight from Australia and though it was a car smaller than a Mini, it had the styling of a 1950s Cadillac. Fiberglass was used for its body, so it gave the designers a chance to get creative with it. Unfortunately, the Zeta didn’t quite benefit from this… the design wasn’t only less than adequate, but it wasn’t fun driving the car either – its engine wasn’t good at all.

Lightburn Zeta

Lightburn Zeta

Toyota MasterAce

If Volkswagen’s iconic microbus had a Japanese version, then it would probably be the Toyota MasterAce. In fact, it was Toyota’s response to Chrysler’s minivan in 1983. All we can say is that Toyota is an excellent car manufacturer, but this vehicle simply isn’t good looking.

Toyota MasterAce

Toyota MasterAce

Subaru BRAT

Actually, BRAT is an acronym for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter. However, we think that the acronym is way more suitable for this vehicle. The BRAT was manufactured by Subaru back in the ‘70s but we’re glad it isn’t around anymore.

Subaru BRAT

Subaru BRAT

Plymouth Prowler

No one really knows if it’s just a coincidence that the Plymouth brand died soon after the release of the Prowler, but we think there is certainly a correlation between the two events. While it was an attempt by the brand to create a ’50s inspired American hot rod, it just didn’t work. However, despite the unfortunate design, these days, a Prowler would still cost serious money.

Plymouth Prowler

1948 Studebaker Convertible

The 1948 Studebaker Convertible might not be the worst we’ve seen but it isn’t exactly great either. It looks quite like a generic convertible from the ‘50s which was unsuccessfully downsized.

Chevrolet SSR

If you have ever seen a clown car, you would know that a convertible truck isn’t really a good idea. This two-passenger Chevy has awkward and unbalanced proportions, making it look like a stretched balloon instead of a stylish truck.

Chevrolet SSR

Chevrolet HHR

The Chevrolet HHR is clearly a bad PT Cruiser ripoff. They could have at least made an attempt to switch up the design to make it not so obvious. But alas, all we get is this…car.

Electra Meccanica Solo Ev Commuter

Don’t you feel like the designers have forgotten to add the car’s other half? Well, that’s what we think when we saw it. Actually, the Electra Meccanica Solo EV Commuter is a street-legal electric car with only three wheels. What’s more surprising is that this car’s can go as fast as 82 mph. Yes, you read that right.

Electra Meccanica Solo Ev Commuter

Electra Meccanica Solo Ev Commuter

Sbarro 4×4 +2 Concept Car

This is a concept car, but it is too…special not to be mentioned. This is not the typical 4×4 because it is actually a 4×4 plus 2, meaning it has two additional wheels. In addition to the abnormal number of wheels, it comes with a lot of bumpers, has a monstrous appearance and looks like something that came from outer space.

Sbarro 4x4

Sbarro 4×4

Jensen S-V8

In most cases, British classic cars are unique and beautiful cars. However, the Jensen S-V8 is definitely an exception. With its design, it may well be the Frankenstein of cars. It looks as if its parts had been taken from all kinds of different cars.

Jensen S V8

Jensen S V8

Jetstream SC250

You can most likely tell that this car’s designer wanted to create something which looked cool and fast. However, the result unfortunately does not reflect that a lot. It looks like there was a glitch in a racing video game and it came out, which might explain its odd design.

Jetstream SC250

Jetstream SC250

Bufori Geneva

We guess that they wanted this car to come out looking like a Rolls Royce but with a twist. Sadly, the only twist that we see is the grille that looks pretty snout-like. It actually appears as if it were a Rolls Royce knockoff or one which simply malfunctioned but the designers decided not to admit it.

Bufori Geneva

Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake

If you have ever wanted to try driving a noodle, this is your chance! The Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake resembles a gothic hearse which was accidentally stretched out too much. Even though the Aston Martin is known for making stunning cars, this is clearly not one of them.

Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake

Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake

Marcos Mantis XP

For quite some time, video games seem to have been very popular. The Marcos Mantis XP appears as if it came directly out of one, but it glitched so bad on the way. The design makes it look like the car got run over and its hood suffered most of the damage!

Marcos Mantis XP

Marcos Mantis XP

Marcos Mantis M70

It seems as if Marcos has had a streak of bad luck. Their designers probably were scrambling for new designs which is why they went through with them all – even the bad ones. This car was probably meant to be just like the car in the film Back to the Future but it failed quite spectacularly.

Marcos Mantis M70

Marcos Mantis M70

Mitsuoka Orochi

We think the Mitsuoka Orochi closely resembles an extra-terrestrial. Its design appears to have been randomly thrown together with the hopes that the car will magically come out beautiful. The part that is the most unbelievable is the fact that this car successfully got to the production line.

Mitsuoka Orochi

Mitsuoka Orochi

Tirrito Ayrton R

This car was meant to be a wonderful tribute to a well known racing driver. However, the Tirrito Ayrton R has obviously fallen short. From the angular and too-sharp design to the four tiny headlights, everything about its design just doesn’t work together. Quite a shame, actually.

Tirrito Ayrton R

Tirrito Ayrton R

Ssangyong Rodius

To this day, there are still examples of Ssangyong Rodius that can occasionally be seen on the road. It pretty much looks like a minivan which was in the process of changing into an SUV but didn’t succeed and got stuck. Now we are left with this… thing.

Ssangyong Rodius

Ssangyong Rodius

Stutz Bearcat II

Cruella De Ville would totally love to drive this car. With its over-the-top bumper and headlights, any supervillain would absolutely adore this peculiar car. In fact, it might have been a cool ride had it not been for the front details which are pretty excessive.

Stutz Bearcat II

Stutz Bearcat II

Sbarro Autobau

There is a debate whether this is a comb or a shaver. Even though we don’t know the right answer to that, we do know that it is an ugly car. While it may be a concept car which was revealed in 2010, we have to say that it shouldn’t have even reached that stage. It really looks like a mess.

Sbarro Autobau

Sbarro Autobau

Pontiac Trans Sport

The Pontiac Trans Sport may actually get the title of the ultimate ugly minivan. It closely resembles a vacuum – not a look most people would want in a car. Minivans are quite good, especially for families that has more kids, but this one looks pretty awful.

Volkswagen Type 181 – The Thing

Lamborghini LM002

This is Lamborghini’s first attempt to make an SUV but could someone please make them stop? The LM002 looks like someone broke it from the inside out. It’s as if that person went under the hood, then proceeded to hit it repeatedly using a sledgehammer.

Isuzu VehiCROSS

You can say whatever it is you think about this car, but what you can’t say is that it isn’t ugly. That fact is undeniable. This car looks like a balloon which is in the middle of deflating. After three model years, Isuzu understandably eliminated this concept car. Who can blame them?

Isuzu VehiCROSS

Isuzu VehiCROSS

Reva G-Wiz

We know that this car was created with good intentions – to provide a solution for urban parking issues and traffic jams, but you can’t really deny that this car is ugly. It looks like some toy car had been mistaken as a real car.

1990 Chevrolet Lumina APV

The concept of a minivan is to maximize the car’s interior space, right? Then we have to ask: how come this one has a ridiculously long front? We’re pretty sure the driver feels like they’re sitting in the back seat when driving.

1990 Chevrolet Lumina APV

Jeep Renegade

Over the years, Jeep has designed a number of the best SUVs. This is not among them. It actually looks like an Apple product that has been rejected and not a sophisticated SUV. This question should be asked: why would someone choose to buy this model if Jeep makes much better-looking ones?

Corbin Sparrow

This is your chance if you want to drive a jellybean. The Corbin Sparrow may be more of a motorcycle, but it’s still technically a car. Therefore, it has to be included in this list.

Bond Bug

We know the name doesn’t have anything to do with James Bond, yet let’s face it, he wouldn’t ever drive this car anyway. It closely resembles a vacuum, but not really a three-wheeled car. Would you believe that the makers were aiming for a ‘fun car’ when they created this?

Bond Bug

1961 Amphicar

Yet another experimental model, the Amphicar looks a lot like an actual car’s mini version. In addition, the manufacturers made it in a way that it is capable of driving through water. No, we’re not kidding.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am

Back in the ’90s, Pontiac was seriously obsessed with plastic and the Grand Am proves that. Clearly, the design was neglected since it resembled a Tupperware container and not a car. Not only was the styling horrendous, the car itself wasn’t also great. It came with a 4-cylinder engine which had 150 horsepower.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am

1996 Pontiac Grand Am

1993 Ford Aspire

The Ford Aspire is named ironically since no one actually aspired to own it. This car not only has a horrendous design, but its mechanics are also equally bad, if not worse. It would have been better if its 4-cylinder engine was used for a sewing machine since it just had 60 horsepower, not to mention a 5-speed manual transmission.

1993 Ford Aspire

1993 Ford Aspire

2010 Chevy Aveo

Clearly, the jellybean-shaped subcompact cars were something Chevrolet was trying to break free of when they made this car. However, the exterior design of the Aveo isn’t so appealing and the interior is worse since it seriously lacked soundproofing and was cheaply made.

2010 Chevy Aveo

1992 Subaru SVX

Subaru cars are known to be practical and dependable and able to do just about anything. Unfortunately, Subaru dropped the ball with the SVX. The 4-speed transmission was useless and it seemed as if the exterior was created by accident. For some unknown reason, this Italian-designed model came with split windows-within-windows that were difficult to use. What’s more, the car cost nearly $10,000 more than the other models from Subaru.

1997 GM EV-1

It’s great that GM decided to create an electric car in 1997, but the EV-1 was terribly styled, could only go as fast as around 80 miles and was just available by leasing. These days, it’s highly unlikely that one of these can be seen on the streets seeing as GM gathered nearly all of them back in 2002.

1997 GM EV 1

1992 Ford Probe

While we all know that there are many cars with unfortunate names, the Ford Probe is certainly on the top ten for having one of the worst ones. It seems the shoe-shaped car was meant to look speedy and sleek but in reality, it resembles a UFO which never got off the ground. Ford and Mazda actually created this model in a joint effort and even though you probably think they would create something great, the Probe included a weak V6 and poor FWD mechanism which didn’t help sales. It ended up getting taken off the market just eight years after it was released.

1992 Ford Probe

1989 Geo Metro

Another collaboration but this time it was between Suzuki and GM. The Geo Metro came with a 3-cylinder engine that was naturally slow because of the fact that it was only capable of putting out 50 horsepower. It was clear that the interior was cheaply made. As for the exterior design, it makes the car look like a bean. All the same, it should be mentioned that there are a lot of owners claiming that they have driven the car more than 250,000 miles, so it seems it was built to last .

1989 Geo Metro

1999 Toyota Echo

This is the kind of car you would be disappointed to get when you take the keys from the rental car agent. The Toyota Echo drove like a go-cart. If you tried to accelerate, it was like stepping on a mound of mashed potatoes. Needless to say, the exterior was equally bad. It resembles a fat gummy bear that has tiny wheels.

1998 Land Rover Discovery II

Britain is known for building cars that are iconic. However, there are always exceptions to a rule. The Land Rover Discovery II is a clear example. It has a lot of electrical problems and its box-like design makes the vehicle look like it belongs in a safari instead of the city.

1995 Chevy Monte Carlo

The Monte Carlo might have been almost cool back in the early ’70s. However, since then, the car just looks like a rather boring spaceship. To top it off, the lame-looking car came with front-wheel drive and its V6 engine had poor performance.

2012 Dodge Caliber

You’d think that if several car companies came together, they would make a great car, right? Well, not this time. The Dodge Caliber is a hatchback that has front-wheel drive, a dark interior with a lot of blind spots and a terrible 2.0L engine dubbed the World Gasoline Engine. Aside from the terrible mechanics, this car’s exterior design is really boring, with a boxy appearance which Dodge has the tendency to stick to in general.

1999 Jaguar S-Type

In 1998, Jaguar brought back its iconic S-Type and everyone in the automobile industry let out a sigh. This car’s design is basically yawn-inducing. It seems like Jaguar tried to combine varoius classic car designs without much success. Even when the car was released, it was perceived as outdated and awkward, so it is surprising that it managed to hold up until 2007.

2009 Smart ForTwo

This European micro-car may seem like an excellent idea for people living in a big city but in reality, it isn’t that great. Its size is the only thing it has going for it. Aside from that, it is pretty awful. The transmission is searching and vague, and has poor fuel economy considering its size. However, its exterior is actually worse. Its paint is constantly peeling and the car looks like a children’s toy due to its design.

1997 Daewoo Nubira

You might find it hard to remember this car, but we don’t blame you. Yet another collaboration between car manufacturers, the Nubira comes with an underwhelming design and a weak inline-four engine. As icing on the cake, the car had really bad build quality and its interior was wrapped in nasty plastic.

Sir Vival

The Sir Vival was also a concept car just like the Aurora and was made as a response to Detroit lacking focus on safety back in the ‘50s. At the time, the car was called “revolutionary vehicle” by the creator. In spite of the fact that the car never reached the production stage, it did feature various innovative safety concepts, such as seat belts, sliding doors, a roller cage, side lights, and rubber bumpers. All the same, the most noticeable feature of the car was the two-part frame. However, we feel that that was the car’s downfall. The car was an excellent idea in theory but how it was executed with regard to the design is quite unfortunate since it resembles a vacuum cleaner.

1941 Horch 853 SportCabriolet

Horch had actually made this piece of work long before Audi did. The 853 SportsCabriolet was among the later cars which was created by the brand. A lot of their models came with classic themes, but this conversion is quite unique. This may not be the car’s original state, but it still existed, so we had to include it in our list. As a work vehicle, this car would be ideal due to its 4.9L straight-8 engine. However, it looked like a cicada shell with wheels because of the modifications. We guess all that glasswork also turns the interior into one hot oven.

1957 Jeep FC-150

When Willys Motors released their Jeep four-wheel-drive trucks, it was a new venture for the company during that time. The vehicles were highly-maneuverable workhorses which were revolutionary back then. While we respect the innovation they showed with creating these trucks, we have to say that we’re really glad Jeep cars don’t have this look anymore. This truck resembles a toy which was made incorrectly.

1947 Julien MM5

The production of this French convertible was from 1947 to 1949. The French government had to approve it at the time and free up the materials necessary for its production because of the fact that France was experiencing shortage. All the same, not a lot were made and they were fitted with different types of engines over the years. The performance of the car was described as “acceptable” at its best. However, we can’t get past its design. The car literally looks like an insect. Perhaps they were inspired by the classic Volkswagen Beetle.
