They found the daughter and granddaughter of the woman on the phone, who appeared surprised to find kindhearted and well-intending young people at their doorsteps. The older woman ushered the three inside the house and took them to meet the matriarch of the family, the original owner of the couch that was now sitting in their New York apartment.
