The Romanian government feared that this would cause Nadia to defect as well and so they instituted a travel ban for her. They also monitored and screened all of her letters and phone calls. The young woman had no freedom or privacy whatsoever. The only times she was given permission to leave the country was to fly abroad in order to participate in various competitions.
Throwing In The Towel
Nadia made a bold decision in 1984 when she chose that she would retire from the sport. However, the decision did not mean she was quitting gymnastics altogether. She actually moved on to coaching the Romanian gymnastics team instead. However, this position would prove to make the future even more difficult for her.
