The New Girl
During the 1984 Olympic Games, Nadia was in for the surprise of her life. She saw none other than Béla Károlyi, her former coach, across the mats. By then, he was actually a coach for the U.S. gymnastics team. He had also taken Mary Lou Retton under his wing. Nadia was likely hurt by this revelation, although she was aware that he did the best thing he could in his position.
Mary Lou Retton
Mary Lou Retton was born on January 24, 1968. She fell in love with gymnastics, something she attributed to witnessing Nadia Comăneci sweep the floor at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. She decided to move to Houston, Texas upon learning that coaches Béla and Márta Károlyi have relocated there. She soon began training with them.
