A Mixed Reception
Her arrival in America understandably became huge news. Everyone learned about it immediately and journalists wanted to know more about the young woman. They kept asking her questions like “What are your plans now?” Nadia never had any problems maintaining her cool so she only smiled and replied in her broken English. Some people were not as welcoming due to malicious rumors that had been going around but most people were glad that she was there.

Upon learning that Nadia made it to the United States, Béla Károlyi did not hesitate to extend his hand to his old student. He was far from being the only person trying to get in touch with her, however. A lot of people made attempts to contact her, though they never heard back from her. The reason that Nadia had not been returning calls was that she did not know about them. Constantin Panait had actually been intercepting them!
