The major backlash came as no surprise. It was from both people who had liked the picture as well as groups that support animal rights. However, the police department in the area explained that what happened was them enforcing the law. The department’s chief, Scott Underwood, told the media, “From our standpoint, it’s a pretty clear case of an ordinance that makes it clear what’s permissible and what’s not. Our job is to enforce the ordinance.”

Dan didn’t really have a choice. He, unfortunately, had to give up his dog or he would have been asked to pay $500, or even would’ve gotten jail time if he had chosen to keep his dog. The picture that went viral had been, at first, the reason why he was in this messy situation. However, it too was the thing that would help Dan out. People online got stunned by the fact that authorities had the ability to take away a person’s dog even if the dog did nothing wrong.
