Karen Goes Solo

Joe Osborn knew that Karen was special when she performed in front of him late at night during a garage session. He immediately signed her to his label, Magic Lamp Records. Soon after, he would also snap up Richard under Lightup Music, the publishing branch. Karen was able to record and release a single with the help of the other Richard Carpenter Trio members. Unfortunately, it did not become successful and she was dropped by the label.

New Band

In 1967, the siblings decided to launch a larger band alongside fellow Long Beach State musicians. It was called “Spectrum” and they shipped their demos to various Los Angeles labels. It was unfortunate that they did not get a positive reception and the band split up after only a year. At the time, psychedelic rock was popular and the music made by the band was deemed as too mellow. It was rejected by both the clubs and record labels because it was not considered danceable music.
